We took notes on the electromagnetic spectrum and looked at a lightbulb through a diffraction grating. For more detailed information about diffraction gratings, click here. We then looked at a number of light sources (hydrogen, helium, sodium, and mercury) through the spectroscopes.
Using the known spectral data, astronomers can identify the elements that are present in stars.
